University has no sense without ‘freedom’ or ‘independence’: Rouhani

TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that “freedom” and “independence” are two important characteristics of university without which university has no sense.

He made the remarks in a gathering of the Islamic Azad University directors in Tehran on Tuesday.
There should be “independence” and “freedom” in the universities while moralities and religious and national obligations are being respected, he stated.

He also said that interferences in the universities and academic centers should be restricted.

The universities should be helped to become independent and create a competitive environment with other universities in other countries, he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks the president said that the establishment of Azad University proved that delegating affairs to the private sector will make development much easier.

The president also unveiled some technological and scientific progresses made by the Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch.
